User profile system updated

Posted by: Tony in The Mac Space on

The Mac Space is now running a beta version of an updated profiling system.  This is a newer and better version of the system we were running before.  So far everything is working great, but let me know if you have any problems.

Dual G5 Problems

Posted by: Tony in PowermacPersonal on

I'm having problems with my dual G5.  I think my hard drive finally bit the dust.  I've got the data backed up and fortunately these days hard drives are SO cheap it won't cost a ton to put a new one in.

I'm likely going to just put a 1 terabyte drive in it and all it's going to run is about $180.00.

The pain will be getting all my software working again, and reauthorizing my adobe products.

They've found us

I just got a Mac Space mail from a "female who checked out my profile and want relationship with me."  While I'm flattered that this female "want relationship" with me, I know better.  his is a bulk message from a spammer.

New profile field: Favorite Apple product

Now when members register I've implemented a new required registration filed called "Favorite Apple Product."  A person registering must put in something into this field.  The bots are likely not smart enough to put "iPod" or "iMac" into this field.  Hopefully that will slow them down.

Manual Approval

I've also enabled "manual profile approval" for the first time.  Now new members are not automatically approved if they get past the captcha and email confirmation as was previously the case.  They have to be manually approved by a Mac Space administrator.

I hope these measure keep TMS free of spammers!

$399 Mac Clone

Posted by: Tony in Powermac on

I wonder if I should hurry and buy one of the new $399 mac clones before they're shut down by Apple.

I'd almost forgotten my old "Power Computing" "Power 100" computer, from back when clones were OK.

Blog and comment system upgraded

Posted by: Tony in The Mac Space on

Ok I believe I've finished my current batch of upgrades and tweaks to the blogging and comment system.

There are a few new features and some better ways of laying out the menus, I hope!

If things seem strange....

I'm working on the menuing and the blog system right now.  So things may act a little strange for a while.  Check back later if it's not working.

Got two monitors running on my G5 now

Posted by: Tony in Untagged  on

A pal of mine gave me a Mac DVI to VGA adapter which he bought at the closing of compUSA for $2.00.  I have no idea how much this cable would normally be, but it's safe to say it would be more than $2.00.

I've had a 23" Acer monitor hooked up to the DVI port of my Dual G5 2.0 and decided to hook up my old 1280x1024 LCD to the 2nd monitor port.  I couldn't find the original Apple DVI-VGA adapter so I looked on ebay.  They're only $5.00.

Right before I bought one on ebay, I found my original.  So now I have two monitors:

1. Main 23" monitor at 1920x1200

2. Monitor 2 is a 19" at 1280x1024

Now I'm going to be playing with Spaces again to see if it works.  I couldn't use it when I first upgraded to Leopard but maybe now that I'm at 10.5.2 it will work.

TMS Blog Installed

Posted by: Tony in Untagged  on

Wow.  I'm blogging about adding a blog.

I've installed Wordpress and made a separate location for The Mac Space Blog.  The Mac Space Blog is located here:

http://www.themacspace.com/blog

TMS Blog will hopefully help us network TMS and bring more traffic in from the blogosphere.   Posts at TMS Blog will be more casual and "blog-like" and some of the more mainstream items which appear in the main TMS articles will appear there as well.

Any TMS members who are good bloggers who wish to be contributing writers, please let us know.

MacBook Air now shipping

Apple is now shipping the new MacBook Air.  My cousin told me today he already ordered one, so his is probably on the way!

Not thrilled with the phones iPods come with

Posted by: Tony in Untagged  on

Had a flight to Orlando and back last week and I finally got to break my new iPod shuffle out of the wrapper and use it.  I'm very happy with the unit but, just as I remember, the headphones don't fit in my ears very well.  They slip out and as they slip the bass goes away.

So the 2nd time I got to use them I busted out my Etymotic i6 Isolator headphones and they work much better since they go right in the canal of the ear.

Overall I'm very happy with my Shuffle and the size is so tiny it's amazing.  Now I just have to be careful not to lose the thing.
