This detailed article at CNET describes, almost to the letter, the problems I’m having with my iPhone 3G. The comment thread for the article also has dozens of people chiming in with similar stories.
No “official” word from Apple though as I’d expect. The unofficial word is that Apple is trying to work out a problem with the Infineon chipset which is rumored to be the cause. They’ll probably try to act like this is no big deal and release a “bug fix” update quietly in the night, hoping for as little bad press as possible.
2-3%?
Most of the articles about the 3G problems state that 2-3% of the iPhone users are affected by these glitches. I bet that number is considerably higher. I bet that 2-3% are actually reporting the problems.

I experienced a similar problem. When I bought my iPhone though, I first checked Got Reception? (http://www.gotreception.com) – a great resource for finding out where reception problems are most likely to occur BEFORE you lock yourself with a specific carrier.
